OnePlus Confirms 40,000 Customers' Data at Risk

Jan 19, 2018, 11:17 AM   by Eric M. Zeman

OnePlus today said up to 40,000 customers' credit card data may have been lifted in an attack. Earlier this week, OnePlus customers reported fraudulent activity on their credit cards after making purchases from OnePlus' web site. OnePlus says its investigation shows the company was indeed compromised. "One of our systems was attacked, and a malicious script was injected into the payment page code to sniff out credit card info while it was being entered," explained the company. "The malicious script operated intermittently, capturing and sending data directly from the user's browser. It has since been eliminated. We have quarantined the infected server and reinforced all relevant system structures." OnePlus believes people who used its web site between mid-November 2017 and January 11, 2018, may be impacted by the breach. At risk are credit card numbers along with their expiration dates and security codes. OnePlus says customers who used PayPal aren't affected. The company has emailed everyone it believes may be at risk. In the mean time, OnePlus suggests those who made purchases on OnePlus.net during the above time frame should examine their bank statements for any fraudulent charges. "We cannot apologize enough for letting something like this happen," said OnePlus. "We are working with our providers and local authorities to better address the incident. We are also working with our current payment providers to implement a more secure credit card payment method, as well as conducting an in-depth security audit. All these measures will help us prevent such incidents from happening in the future." The company thanked its customers for their understanding and its community for its continued support.

OnePlus Investigating Customer Credit Card Security Lapse

Jan 16, 2018, 8:13 AM   by Eric M. Zeman

OnePlus said it is taking customer complaints about compromised credit card data seriously and is investigating around the clock. Nearly 200 people who purchased products from OnePlus' web site reported fraudulent activity on their credit cards afterwards. As a precaution, the company has disabled credit card payments on its web site and is only accepting PayPal for the moment. The company insists that customer card data is never processed or saved on OnePlus.net; instead, it is sent directly to its PCI-DSS-compliant payment processing partner over an encrypted connection where it is processed on secure servers. While the company investigates, OnePlus suggests all customers contact their credit card issuer and/or check their statements to ensure there is no fraudulent activity. OnePlus concluded by saying, "This is an ongoing investigation. We are working with our third-party providers, and will update you on our findings as they surface. Information security is a very serious topic, and it has always been one of our top priorities." OnePlus smartphones, such as the OnePlus 5T, are only available to purchase from the company's web site.

OnePlus Eying U.S. Carriers As It Preps Next Flagship

Jan 12, 2018, 8:39 AM   by Eric M. Zeman

OnePlus is looking to grow its business beyond the enthusiast crowd. Speaking to CNET, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau said, "If the right opportunity and right timing come along, we'll be very happy to experiment" with a distribution deal with U.S. carriers. OnePlus handsets are available only from the company itself. Striking a distribution deal with a U.S. carrier would give the brand far more visibility. For now, OnePlus believes it can earn more sales via its reputation. Lau also noted the company's next handset is arriving toward the end of the second quarter and it will make use of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor. "Of course, there's no other choice," Lau said. OnePlus is not sure if it will produce two flagship handsets in 2018, as it has done the two previous years. Last, OnePlus expects to bring the Face Unlock feature, first offered on the 5T, to its older 3 and 3T handsets. "There's no reason to withhold features we can easily implement," said OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei.

The services impacted include Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies, and Netflix. The OnePlus 5T has a full HD+ display and a powerful Snapdragon 835 processor with 8 GB of RAM, meaning the hardware is certainly capable of delivering HD content. OnePlus confirmed the issue to The Verge and said a future update will resolve the deficiency. The issue pertains to the 5T's lack of support for Widevine Level 1 DRM, something content services often require for HD streaming. OnePlus did not say when the software fix might be made available.

One the initial install is complete, devices with beta software installed will receive future beta updates over the air. OnePlus warns there is no backward path for downgrading to the stable, public release channel without first wiping the device. Users will need to enroll in the Open Beta program in order to gain access to the code. In other OnePlus news, the company has updated its new handset, the OnePlus 5T, to OxygenOS 4.7.2. OnePlus 3 and 3T Receiving Maintenance Update

Feb 10, 2017, 12:22 PM   by Eric M. Zeman

OnePlus is pushing out a minor system update to both the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T smartphones. OxygenOS 4.0.3 chiefly resolves some bugs, but does manage to add a few new features. For example, the phones gain a toggle for switching on WiFi IPv6, as well as the Amazon Prime app in some regions. OnePlus says OxygenOS 4.0.3 improves the the way both phones transition from poor WiFi to LTE data when the hotspot connection drops. Other fixes include increased stability and optimized night time photos in the camera; updated audio parameters and cleaner audio recordings; and updated APNs for select global carriers. OnePlus says the update will roll out in waves over the next few weeks.

OnePlus Delivers Updates to 3 and 3T

Dec 15, 2016, 8:27 AM   by Eric M. Zeman

OnePlus has published new builds of OxygenOS for its OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T smartphones. OnePlus 3 owners who've signed up as beta testers can now access OxygenOS Open Beta 9. This beta is based on Android 7 Nougat. OnePlus says the beta expands screenshots, optimizes shelf design and other UI elements, and stabilizes battery and system performance. Beta testers who've already installed previous builds of the beta will be able to download Open Beta 9 over the air. Otherwise, the beta needs to be sideloaded from a PC. OxygenOS 3.5.4 for the OnePlus 3T is a bug-fixing update and does not include Nougat. For example, the update improves performance on T-Mobile's network. It also reduces lag when the battery is below 5%, restores GPS and auto-rotate behaviors when battery saver mode is turned off, resolves a camera bug, and increases stability system wide. The update is available as an over-the-air download.

OnePlus 3 Granted Android 7 Nougat Beta

Nov 30, 2016, 3:24 PM   by Eric M. Zeman

OnePlus today made OxygenOS Open Beta 8 available to the OnePlus 3 smartphone. This new platform shifts from Marshmallow to Nougat and introduces a significant number of user interface changes. For example, the beta build refreshes the design of the notifications and setting menus. It also adds multi-window view, notification direct reply, status bar icon options, and quick launch for third-party applications. OnePlus says there are some known issues in the Nougat beta, which breaks Android Pay and introduces some stability and performance problems. OnePlus warns that the beta cannot be installed over-the-air and will instead need to be side loaded manually. Moreover, beta testers will not easily be able to return to earlier versions of Android/OxygenOS without reformatting their device. OnePlus said it is working to create a single software build for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T based on Nougat. It expects to do that by the end of the year. Until then, the 3 and 3T will be updated separately. The company recently updated both handsets. The 3T, for example, was updated to OxygenOS 3.5.3 while the 3 was updated to OxygenOS 3.2.8. Both of these system builds are incremental updates that focus mainly on resolving bugs and performance issues. They are rolling out slowly as over-the-air installations.
